Demographics and Diversity
A suburban community of more than 325,000 situated midway between Baltimore and Washington, Howard County boasts a diverse population. Students in our schools speak more than 117 different languages. We are a county of contrasts - a blend of old and new, urban and rural, historical and progressive. The county includes Ellicott City, one of our nation’s oldest towns, and Columbia, a planned community developed only 50 years ago by Jim Rouse. It is one of Maryland’s fastest-growing counties as its population has increased by 34 percent over the past decade.
In this community, reside more than 160,000 women and girls, representing more than half the population of the County. While the distribution by gender is fairly even across most age groups, the proportion of women is high among 20-year-old, 35–39-year-old, and over 80-year-old age groups. Women represent 60% of the 85 and older age group. Black women represent the highest percentage. The proportion of black women is highest across all race/ethnic groups and increases notably in the 65 and older age group. 12% of the women are divorced or widowed, and there are almost 2,500 female veterans in Howard County.
This section of the report captures overall characteristics of Howard County’s female population. Subsequent sections provide more detailed information about Howard County’s women in the following areas: Workforce and the Economy, Education and Educators, Health and Wellbeing, Safety and Justice, and Leadership and Political Participation.
