U.S. News & World Report recognized Howard County as No. 8 among nearly 3,000 counties in its Healthiest Communities rankings in 2021 and is the only Maryland jurisdiction within the top 50 rankings. Howard County was also ranked one of the Healthiest Communities in 2019 and 2020. It has increased its ranking from 2018 at No. 20. Howard County was also ranked No. 6 among its peer group of urban, high-performing communities across the United States.
The County has immediate access to leading health care institutions such as Howard County General Hospital, a community hospital associated with the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Medicine. COVID has placed a stain on healthcare providers across Howard County. According to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, there were 32,956 confirmed COVID cases and 301 deaths as of January 7, 2022. The state of Maryland has had 788,965 and over 12,000 deaths.
